eMule servers, Kad and ED2K

Updated eMule server list, server.met URL, Kad setup, ED2K explanation and practical fixes for Low ID or firewalled status.

Updated 10 August 2026: use Kad alongside a small, current server list. Never replace your list with hundreds of unverified endpoints.

Add an updated server.met list

  1. Open Preferences → Server.
  2. Disable automatic updates from unknown clients if you want a controlled list.
  3. Paste http://upd.emule-security.org/server.met into “Update server.met from URL”.
  4. Click Update, then connect to one of the listed servers.
  5. Also open the Kad tab and connect or bootstrap Kad.

What is Kad, and do you still need servers?

Kad is eMule's decentralised Kademlia network. It can find sources without a central eD2K server, so a user can run Kad alone. In practice, enabling both Kad and a short trusted server list gives easier bootstrapping and an extra discovery route.

A server does not store the file you download. It helps clients discover one another; data travels directly between peers.

Fix Low ID or a firewalled Kad status

  • Use fixed TCP and UDP ports in the client rather than changing them every launch.
  • Allow the same application or ports in the operating-system firewall.
  • If your router supports UPnP, eMule can request mappings; otherwise create them manually.
  • Carrier-grade NAT may prevent inbound connections. Ask the provider for a public IPv4 address or use a service designed for inbound port forwarding.
  • Re-run eMule's port test after every change.

A High ID improves reachability but does not guarantee speed. Source availability, queue position and remote upload capacity still control transfers.

ED2K links

An ed2k:// link contains a filename, size and cryptographic file hash. It helps a compatible client identify a file, but it does not certify legality or safety. Only open links for content you are entitled to obtain.

What is the best eMule server?

There is no permanent best server. Use a short current list, avoid overloaded endpoints and keep Kad enabled as a decentralised discovery route.

Can eMule work without servers?

Yes. Once Kad is bootstrapped, it can discover sources without a central eD2K server.

Why does eMule show Low ID?

Usually the selected incoming ports cannot be reached because of a firewall, router mapping, carrier-grade NAT or another network restriction.
