eMule combines file transfers with tools for finding sources, managing links and communicating with peers. The original article introduced these features through the eDonkey network. eMule also supports decentralised Kad discovery.
Open links and manage sources
An ed2k:// file link identifies a file by its name, size and hash. A compatible client can open the link and search for sources. The hash helps identify the requested file; it does not establish that the file is safe, available or authorised for sharing.
eMule can import a server.met list from a URL and show information about the peers involved in a transfer. These tools become easier to understand as you use the client and inspect the details of your own downloads.
Keep the server list current
Servers help users discover sources on eD2K. They do not host the file data being transferred. A short, maintained list is more useful than a long collection of old endpoints.
The original article listed servers such as Silent Bob and RazorBack. Those historical IP addresses have been removed from this edition because they are not a current connection list. Use the server and Kad guide for the updater URL and a dated public snapshot.
Search for files
The client offers server-based searches and Kad searches. A local server search queries the server you are connected to; other search modes can look more widely. The original description called Kad experimental, which is no longer an appropriate description of its role in eMule.
Search expressions and filters can help narrow results. Inspect filenames, sizes, availability and comments before adding a download. A popular result or a familiar name is not proof that the contents are trustworthy.
Friends and messaging
eMule includes a friends list and peer messaging. You can add another client as a friend and use the information available in the client to see its status. Spam led to changes in messaging behaviour across releases, so use the filtering options available in your version.
The original article also described the built-in IRC client, which provides a separate route for chat. Do not open unsolicited links or disclose sensitive information through messages.
Next steps
Follow the setup manual to configure the client, or read part two of the eMule tutorial for search, queues and server-list management.
